Bichua Dagger

Bichua Dagger with Gold Koftgari - Sikligar Craft, Udaipur

This bichua is a classic example of Sikligar workmanship from Udaipur, Rajasthan. The Sikligar community has been crafting arms for centuries, originally for Rajput warriors, and they're known for preserving traditional Koftgari and Wootz techniques.

Blade
Steel: Very fine Wootz steel, the legendary crucible steel of ancient India. You’ll see the natural “watered silk” pattern in the metal - wavy, smoky lines that catch the light. No two Wootz blades are identical.
Shape: Classic bichua profile - a short, recurved blade with a dramatic belly and pointed tip. Designed for close combat, but this piece is more ceremonial/collector grade.
Edge: Serrated edge on both side, the serrations are hand-filed and purely functional in traditional pieces, though here they also add visual drama.
Finish: Highly polished to bring out the Wootz pattern. The contrast between the dark and light bands is a sign of high carbon content and proper heat treatment.

Koftgari Work
Coverage: Gold Koftgari “all over” - meaning both sides of the blade and the hilt are covered in intricate gold inlay. This is labor intensive and marks it as a high-status piece.
Technique: Artisans etch the steel surface, then hammer pure gold wire into the grooves and burnish it flush. The motifs are typically Mughal/Rajput: floral vines, lotus, peacocks, or geometric jaali patterns.
Artisans: Done by skilled Sikligar craftsmen in Udaipur. The community is one of the last keeping true Koftgari alive, passing techniques down through generations.

Hilt : bone hand grip in curved pattern with gold inlay work.

Overall Character
Era/Style: Reflects 18th-19th century Rajput style, though Sikligars still make them today using traditional methods.
Purpose: Originally a weapon, but pieces like this with extensive gold work were symbols of rank. Today they’re collected, gifted at weddings, or displayed in homes and museums.
Dimensions: 18 inches approx

Cultural Significance
The bichua + Koftgari combo ties directly to Mewar royalty and Rajput martial culture. Udaipur’s Sikligars supplied the Maharanas of Mewar. A piece like this isn’t just a dagger - it’s a slice of living craft heritage.
