The Craft Behind This Piece: Koftgari and Damascening

Rajasthan is home to flamboyant crafts and is equally known as the land of dazzling valour. The craft of Koftgari, practiced for five generations by the Sikligar community, is renowned for being both aesthetic and resilient. This technique involves carefully cutting grooves into the metal surface, then inserting and hammering gold or silver wire to create intricate decorative patterns.

This community has carried forward the legacy of crafting weapons and armor fit for the warrior clan. The handles and casings of these pieces showcase exquisite inlaid ornamentation, a hallmark that also reflects the quality of the craftsmanship. Popularly known as damascening, this technique has been passed down through generations by the Sikligar community, based in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
